In The Emperor's Wake

In the Emperor's Wake: Chapter 2

Scene:1

The Adversary.

Dramatis Personae:
Unknown Demonic Person
Unknown Hexenwolf

The scene opens with a person (?) leaning back in a chair boots upon the table. He rests his boots upon a table. The boots have spurs with a diabolic looking long horn steer instead of stars upon them. A humbled male cowboy enters the room. The figure seated looks up and asks the cowboy “Did you get her?” The cowboy replies “No sir, we did not.” (I’ll be condensing this from this point on). The seated creature is obviously disappointed. The cowboy is worried that he will be punished but the creature assures him he will not be.

Scene:2

The Sheriff is Kidnapped

Dramatis Personae:
Sheriff Mat Blackstone
Unknown Demonic Person
Cowboy/Bandit/Hexenwolves

Sheriff Matt Blackstone is kidnapped by the hexenwolves by being lassoed and and knocked out. Matt wakes up on a beach buried up to his neck. There standing before him are some bandits and a rather demonic looking figure with long black fingernails, black cowboy boots, a preachers collar and a broad brimmed hat. The hat hides his face but his eyes can be seen peering out. The adversary shows Matt a fine black box encasing and old dragoon revolver. He offers to free Matt in exchange for the gun, which must be given by Matt. Matt refuses and the Adversary explains that soon crabs will come ashore and eat Matt alive if he doesn’t agree. Matt asks for some time to think about it so the Adversary takes his leave to be guarded by minions. Meanwhile, back at the Sheriff’s office, a native kid shows up to report that the Trading post at the reservation has been burgled. The deputies tell the kid they will get to it soon. Jo and Gavinnotice that the Matt has been unaccounted for some time. Jo activates a tracking device called a K.A.T. (Kinetic Aquisition Transponder) which leads her and Gavin to the Sheriff. Jo used one of her mechanical spider bombs to cause a distraction by sending it down around the curve in the lagoon to detonate out of sight, leaving Matt unguarded. The deputies go down to Matt and work on freeing him. As a precaution Gavin puts up a ward as Jo and Matt attempt to free Matt. Matt gets free and recovers his mystic gun. The Adversary and the minions show up and a gun fight ensues. One bandit is injured to unconsciousness and another of the crew takes a belt off him. Then the rest of the crew leaves. I’m pretty sure The Adversary said something to Matt before he left, but I don’t remember what. Gavin recovers some hexenwolf hair. Matt and the deputies decide to investigate a nearby shack. It has some shell Ohlone jewelry in it. A trap door is discovered with lots of skeletons underneath the shack. Gavin takes a bone. The deputies mention the burglary at the Trading post and the group decides to go to Lyons Walrond’s house to discuss the incidents with him.

Matt takes a report and investigates the scene. Meanwhile Lyons goes out to a private location with Gavin and summons a brownie like fairy. Through a bargain Lyons gains information on whom or what got past the wards. It is surmised that it was the Adversary and his minions and he is in pursuit of magic relics/artifacts. It becomes obvious that the next target will be the Emperor’s sword. The party leaves to go to town

Scene 5:

Where’s the Fire?

Dramatis Personae:
Ayita
Lyons Walrond
Jin Lo
Sheriff Matt Blackstone
Jo McPherson
Gavin O’Donnell

Policemen flambe’

The party arrives at the police department only to find it on fire and under siege. Ayita and Lyons work together to diminish the flames. Matt and his deputies enter the building to search for the Emperor’s sword. Inside they encounter the Adversary and his minions. Matt unleashes Hell with his gun only to make the flames worse. The Adversary is unaffected. Hexenwolves attack, Gavin makes a feeble attack and in turn has his side ripped open by one of the wolves. Jo uses her mechanical shoes and literally kicks a wolf out of the building. The Adversary rips Jo’s arm completely off. Jin Sho enters and punches the Adversary to great effect, causing the Adversary to drop the sword. The Adversary escapes by leaving the building, getting on his horse and enters the Nevernever. The group recovers the sword and puts out the fire.

At some point we did learn that the Adversary was a Denarian known as The Collector who was interested in killing priests. He liked to tell his gang that he was going to church, and then he would go alone. He would always come back with a smile on his face, and in a very good mood, often with a new preachers collar.
